Maintenance study of the frescoes in the temple of Agios Georgios in Kurbinovo

From April 26 until 29, the staff of experts of the European Centre for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments carried out research in the Byzantine church of Agios Georgios in Kurbinovo in order to prepare a study for the preservation of the frescoes preserved at home and abroad. This church is one of the most important monuments of Byzantine Macedonia and preserves one of the leading ensembles of monumental painting of the time of Komnenos (1191).

Last June 2021, the Ministry of Culture of North Macedonia signed a memorandum of cooperation with the European Centre for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments, for the preservation of the frescoes of this very important monument. On-site investigations by the conservators of EKBMM followed and recently the competent services of the Ministry of Culture of North Macedonia approved the elaboration of the relevant study, which includes dye sampling, multispectral archery, UV radiation, x-ray, x-ray, photography with tangential lighting.

These days, the staff of the conservators of EKBMM (Electra Karagiannidou, responsible for the study, Asterios Apostolidis, Alexios Papapelekano and Alexandros Konstantas) headed by Dr. Flora Karagianni, with the assistance of the staff of Ινστιτούτου Μνημείων και Μουσείων στα Μπίτολα (Oliviera Makrievska, Jovica Bogoev, Slave Stojanov, Krste Kocov) directed by Meri Stojanova, carried out on-site exploration work on the monument, using specialized equipment of the latest technology, that was transported from Greece. The aim is to complete the best possible documentation of the original painting, to identify and verify possible earlier paintings and all the operations it has undergone over the centuries, to record its pathology, and finally, the proposed interventions for their maintenance. The study is expected to be completed by the next July, where it will be submitted for approval by the competent bodies of the Ministry of Culture of North Macedonia. Then, the EKBMM will proceed with the execution of the maintenance work of the frescoes on the Greek’s Ministry of Culture and Sports expense.
