World Heritage of South Eastern Europe, 2006

At 2006, the EKBMM organized a conference entitled “World Heritage of South Eastern Europe: Co-operation in the management of cultural sites & landscapes. A follow-up to the Periodic Reporting Exercise for Europe”. At the same year, the third meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage monument coordinators on “Byzantine Monuments and World Heritage – Network for the digitisation of the monuments of the Byzantine World and the creation of a chart for their protection”, was organized by UNESCO and held inThessaloniki, in the Museum of Byzantine Culture “Melina Merkouri” amphitheatre, on 5-6 November 2006. The meeting was attended by representatives from twenty (20) countries (Egypt, Algeria, Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Romania, Serbia, Syria, Tunisia, Jordan, Cyprus, F.Y.R.O.M., Russia, Turkey, Greece), from UNESCO and the European Union. The purpose of the conference was to discuss and agree on the establishment of a network for intervention, to outline the operation of the “Monuments of the Byzantine World” database for the information of the representatives of the various bodies, to present the “Anna Komnene” programme and to draw up a Chart for works on Byzantine monuments on the basis of the proposal submitted by the ΕΚΒΜΜ.
