In March 2023, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the EKBMM and the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Archdiocese of Kyriakupolis. The Memorandum was signed by the President of the Administrative Board of the EKBMM, Professor of Byzantine Archaeology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Mrs. Natalia Poulou, by the Director of the Department of Antiquities of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Jordan, Professor Fadi Bala’awi, and by the Archbishop of Kyriakoupolis, Christoforos. The subject of the Memorandum of Understanding was the preparation and implementation of a Management Plan for the archaeological site of Prophet Elias.

The impressive archeological finds of the ecclesiastical complex of the Pilgrimage of Prophet Elias are located on the top of a hill with an altitude of 900 meters, near the town of Ajlun, on the road connecting Pella and Gerasa. An extensive building complex has been excavated at the site, consisting of a particularly large early Christian basilica and other annexes, decorated with impressive mosaic floors.

Following the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation, and in the period that followed, delegations of EKBMМ traveled to Jordan in order to organize the project and plan the studies for the layout and conservation of the archaeological site of Prophet Elijah. In the summer of 2024, the conservation study for the mosaics of the archaeological site was prepared and submitted to the Jordanian authorities for approval, which was granted in May 2025.

In September 2025, the first phase of the conservation and restoration works on the mosaic floors of the Basilica of Prophet Elijah was carried out. The works included the removal and replacement of earlier perimeter mortars (borders), the repositioning of detached tesserae, the sealing of cracks, and the surface cleaning of the mosaics of the Basilica of Prophet Elijah, as well as of the other mosaic inscriptions located in the surrounding areas.

In November 2025, a mission of EKBMМ, headed by its President Ms. N. Poulou, traveled to Jordan. An on-site visit to the archaeological site took place, during which the impressive results of the first phase of conservation works were confirmed. A series of productive working meetings were also held with relevant institutional and scientific bodies. During these meetings, the EKBMM delegation was accompanied by the Ambassador of Greece to Jordan, Ms. E. Riga, and the Consul, Mr. P. Kondylaros. The conservation works on the mosaics are scheduled to continue and be completed in 2026. At all stages of the organization and planning of the project, the cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Jordan was excellent. During the meetings, the very positive climate of constructive and highly effective cooperation between the two sides was confirmed, along with the shared intention to continue their collaboration for the conservation and promotion of this important archaeological site.
