«Exploring the Byzantine World»

EKBMM implemented a programme entitled «Exploring the Byzantine world». The aim of the programme is to provide digital interactive services in education, promotion and information through an internet multisite concerning byzantine culture. This website will provide digital content for the promotion of the legacy of byzantine culture through interactive digital information services. These services, focused on byzantine monuments, will highlight and inform educators, researchers, students, pupils and interested citizens about tangible and intangible monuments, historical events, achievements but also insights on the everyday life of byzantine civilisation. These digital services will be provided via the internet, info kiosks in the two big byzantine museums in Athens and Thessaloniki and on PDA for the interested traveller.

The website “http://exploringbyzantium.gr“, which has been produced within the project has four axes-services to the visitor.

  1. Cultural Routes: it is possible to tour and get acquainted with Byzantine cities and monuments of Greece.
  2. Thematic Studies: Various aspects of the daily life of the Byzantines are presented such as Byzantine Warfare, Forms of Communication, The city in Byzantium, The home in the municipality, The Social Life in Byzantium, Science and Technology, The customs of the Byzantines.
  3. Educational Activities: eight interactive games are presented for children of the age groups from 5 to 8 and 9 to 14 years old.
  4. Recorded Shows: There are three recorded shows with the theme: “Thessaloniki through the eyes of Byzantine writers of the 12th century”, “Miss once upon a time in Byzantium” and “Building a Byzantine city-castle”.
